BEIJING, June 30, 2012, (Xinhua)

China is restructuring its dairy sector amid tainted-milk scandals, but producing significantly more milk domestically is expected to put colossal strains on the country's resources.

To meet a growing appetite for quality dairy products, the country's fast-growing but fragmented sector faces many challenges, such as a shortage of high-caliber dairy workers, according to dairy companies and insiders.

6th February 2010 Beijing-based Henry Acland reports on significant interest from China in innovative, efficient and safe methods of food production in New Zealand. China relations different across the Tasman

20th October 2009

"[...] a US$ 41 billion deal to allow China to buy liquefied natural gas from a Western Australian gas field should have been cause to celebrate. The deal, between Chinese state-controlled PetroChina and ExxonMobil, is Australia’s biggest ever trade contract by value. Yet despite the deal’s significance, it was reportedly signed in a secret location in Beijing and without media present. Better just to get on with business without having too much involvement from Australian politicians or the public."

New Zealand’s relationship with China is developing differently to Australia’s. The Rio Tinto saga and the fall-out over Rebiya Kadeer’s recent visit to Australia, has made it absolutely clear that Australia’s relationship with China is all but easy. China's growing appetite for New Zealand goods

Henry Acland, Asia: NZ Online, 26th May 2009

The Chinese economy is changing as Beijing attempts to lessen the worst effects of the crisis. It is using the stimulus package to spur domestic demand and also as a catalyst to change how its economy expands in the long run. In recent months, China’s GDP growth has weakened but domestic consumption has not. New Zealand exporters are gaining from increased spending by Chinese consumers coinciding with favourable trading conditions.

China's increasing demand for New Zealand goods

China will be New Zealand’s second largest export partner by 2015, if the trends over the last eight years continue. Since 2001 New Zealand exports to China have grown at around 15 percent a year. Exports to United States and Japan, currently the country’s second and third largest export partners respectively, have not grown as greatly in that same period [I will include a graph].
